Creating Product Choices

It’s easy to create options for products in BV Commerce. Let’s say you’re selling a hat and you want to offer the hat in sizes small, medium and large.

On the Edit Product page click Choices: Edit from the left hand navigation.

You have several options including a Drop Down List, Radio Button List, Checkboxes, HTML Description or Text Input. But let’s start with a simple Drop Down List. Choose it and click New.

Enter small, medium and large in the spaces provided.

Click Save Changes when you’re done, and Go to Store to see your changes reflected on the product.

Types of Choices

Drop Down Lists, Radio Button Lists and Checkboxes are standard.

There is currently not an option to select only one Checkbox.

An HTML Description allows you to add additional information.

A Text Input choice is good for options like Monograms. You can choose space for customers to enter in information. Options include Columns, Rows and Max Length in Characters.

Editing Choice Items

You can change the price or weight of a product depending on a variable such as small, medium or large. You can also create a label for your choices. Click the Edit button.

Under Choice Options, you can click Edit to change the actual choice options. Let’s create a new Option called Hat Sizes and select Is a Label.

On the store side, you can see that Hat Sizes is now displayed in the Drop Down List. It is not a choice. It’s a label-there to show customers what they are selecting. In this case, they are selecting hat sizes.

Choice Items Options: Adjusting Price and Weight

You can also make a price and/or weight adjustment for an option. In this case the small hat costs $2.00 more than a medium or large but weighs $.50 less.

You can use the minus sign to subtract money or weight.

The change will be reflected on the price of the product when the customer makes the selection from the Drop Down List.

Hide Name on Store

If you check Hide Name on Store, the name of the choice will not be displayed. For example, this is what the product page will look like if you check Hide Name on Store. Notice the words New Drop Down List no longer appear.

Variants: This Choice Changes Inventory, Pictures, Prices and/or SKU

You might want to create variants for different sizes, colors, etc… of products. For example, if Hat Size Small is SKU 1234, Hat Size Medium might be SKU1234a.

To do this, start by clicking the This Choice Changes Inventory, Pictures, Prices and/or SKU checkbox. Then click Save Changes.

Go to the left hand navigation and choose Choices: Variants from the list. On the Choices: Variants page you can select the choices from the Drop Down List that you want to change. Choose Edit to make changes to a choice.

If you have a lot of variants, choose Create All Variants and they will all automatically be listed for you.

On the Edit Variant page you can now alter a product based on an option. You can change its SKU number and Price, and you can even upload another Image. (For example, you could upload images of shirts in various colors.)

Click Go to Store to see the changes reflected on your store. You can see that the small variant now has a cheaper price and altered SKU number.

Shared Choices

If you have options that you plan to use on several or more products (For example, you’re running a shoe store and want to include sizes as options), you can use Shared Choices. To learn more, click on Shared Choices in the Merchant Guide.
